2014 Mesa League Conference Individual Championship

Mesa League Conference Champion and Most Valuable Player - Matthew Modelo and Eastlake Head Coach Robert Barrett

Eastlake High School was well represented at the 2014 Mesa League Conference Golf Championships. Top golfers from Mesa League High Schools battled it out over two days on two golf courses - Bonita Golf Course, Day 1, and Admiral Baker North Course, Day 2. Winds were up on both days which made the 36-hole tourney an extra challenge for the golfers.

The top 20 golfers from the Day 1 field advanced to Day 2 with all Titans golfers advancing. All Titans golfers played well earning second or first team honors. The tournament champion was decided in a sudden death playoff between Eastlake's Matthew Modelo and Mater Dei's, Jose Olazabal, who led the tournament after Day 1. In the end, Modelo came out victorious in an exciting finish.

Congratulations to all Titans Golfers and good luck in the upcoming CIF Playoffs the end of the month!

Senior, Alex Valdovinos, admires the flight of his drive as teammates and coach look on.

The Boys Titans Golf Team held their 1st Annual Long Drive Competition on beautiful hole 14 of the team's home course, Eastlake Country Club. Coach Barrett and Coach Matt organized the hitting session providing the players with the same three golf balls each for three opportunities to go the maximum distance. Of course, the player's ball must stay in the fairway for it to count.

Sophomore,Jacky Ahn hit first, with his longest ball measuring close to 290 yards, followed by Brandon Trevino (Sr.), Troy Nelson (Soph.), Davis Harris (Frosh.), Matthew Modelo (Frosh.), Dylan Sullivan (Sr.), then finally Alex Valdovinos (Sr.).

On Alex's last of his three drives, he maxed out at 313 yards!!! Blowing past his competition and taking home the first event's long drive plaque, Alex later on would say that he attributes his driving strength to "...drinking at least one tall glass of milk each day."

Players raised funds with donors either pledging money per yard gained based on the player's driving distance or pledging a flat fee. Thank you to all of the supporters for your generosity and support towards Eastlake Titans Golf.

And...congratulations, Alex, on the whopper!!

The wins this week effectively make the Titans the Mesa League Champions. Impressively, the Titans finished the 2014 regular season 21-0. Going undefeated over the course of three months - playing on opponent's home courses, some very challenging, is quite a feat. The boys golf team should be very proud of themselves for a job well done.

Titans Win Again; Next Week's Schedule

Eastlake defeated Otay Ranch for their seventh win in a row. The Titans remain undefeated this season. The boys get the weekend off then face off against St. Augustine on Monday followed by El Capitan on Wednesday. Both matches will be at Eastlake Country Club.

The Saintsmen are looking to avenge their earlier loss to Eastlake earlier this month at Riverwalk GC. The El Capitan match will be the first of two matches between the two teams this season - the latter will be played at El Cap's home course, Barona.

Titans competitive play will cap off on Thursday, March 20th, when the boys compete at the San Diego Country Club Invitational. This 18-hole tournament event will be comprised of eight San Diego county high schools. Torrey Pines, Cathedral Catholic, La Jolla, St. Augustine, La Jolla Country Day are some of the standout golf programs that Eastlake will compete against. The tournament will conclude with a dinner banquet - family and friends are invited to the dinner.

San Diego Country Club is one of the county's golf course jewels. The golf course is beautifully laid out and has what many golf purists consider to be the best putting greens in town. Although San Diego C.C. is a private club, Chula Vista-area schools are fortunate to be able to compete on a course of this caliber and be located nearby.

**Unlike regular high school golf team matches, spectators are allowed, and encouraged, at this tournament...so come on out, walk the course and cheer for your Eastlake Titans Boys golf team!

TITANS WIN FINAL MATCH OF SEASON - CLINCH MESA LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP! PLAYERS PREPARE FOR SECTION INDIVIDUAL AND TEAM CIF CHAMPIONSHIPS

In a highly anticipated match against league rival Bonita High School at Salt Creek G.C., the Eastlake Titans team held it together and played well enough to secure a win against the Barons, 201-220. It was the final match of the regular season for both schools. Eastlake had already clinched the Mesa league title after their win earlier in the week and Bonita was on a mission to play spoiler to keep Eastlake from going undefeated in league play. However, the Titans would have none of that as the veteran Titans - junior Alex Valdovinos along with senior Conor Most, who was playing in his final career regular season match - kept their balls in play and made the most of every opportunity today.

Congratulations are in order to all Eastlake Boys Golfers!

Now, the focus is on next week's Individual Section Championships, followed by CIF Team Playoffs in two weeks.

PLAY WELL TITANS!

Titans Win! 199-239 Against Mater Dei

The Titans Boys Golf Team won their eighth straight and took the season series against Mater Dei, 199-239, at the beautiful tree-lined Bonita Golf Course. It was the Titans' sixth time this season breaking the 200-stroke mark; a true testament to all the starting players' hard work and determination. Let's see if the boys can finish off the season this Thursday with another sub-200 score, although the Salt Creek venue against Bonita H.S. will be no easy feat.

Congratulations to freshman, Matthew Modelo, for shooting the low-round, 37, to earn Medalist Honors.

Eastlake Wins Seventh Straight - Outduels Olympian

The Titans starting golf team played consistently throughout their round today and walked away with a victory against visiting Olympian. The Titans took the season series against Olympian and their seventh straight win, 200 - 225.

Congratulations to freshman Jacky Ahn for his low round of 1-under par, 35, earning Medalist honors.

Eastlake Beats Bonita 197-245 - 6 Wins in a Row!

The Eastlake Titans and Bonita Barons faced off today on the Eastlake golf course back nine. Course conditions were near-perfect and the weather was sunny yet cool, which made for ideal playing conditions. Eastlake's starting rotation were simply too much for Bonita to handle as the Titans cruised to an easy victory - 197-245.

Congratulations to Matthew Modelo. His steady play was enough to share Co-Medalist honors with one of Bonita's stalwarts as both finished with a one under par score, 35.

Titans Over Lancers for Fifth Straight Win

The Eastlake Titans Boys Golf Team faced off today against the Hilltop Lancers at Salt Creek Golf Course. It was cold with an occasional drizzle. But the weather did not deter the Titans' will to win as they carded their fifth win in a row for a 211-250 victory.

Congratulations to junior Alex Valdovinos and freshman Jacky Ahn for finishing with the low rounds today at +3, 39, earning Co-Medalist Honors!

Titans Play Torrey Pines Golf Course and Get the Win Over Mira Mesa

The Eastlake Titans travelled up to La Jolla today for a 4:30 match against Mira Mesa High School at Torrey Pines - North Golf Course. Once again, the Titans golfers put together strong rounds to combine for a team total of 198 to Mira Mesa's 254. Most impressive was the fact that despite the beautiful surroundings of the course, including immaculate fairways, the putting greens had recently been aerated (punched holes filled with sand) making it difficult to putt. However, the boys still managed a solid finish.

Congratulations to Matthew Modelo for carding a +2, 38, to earn low-round Medalist Honors.

Titans Boys Golf Top Lancers

The Eastlake Boys Golf starting squad scored well today which resulted in a win against visiting Hilltop. As is usual for home matches played at Eastlake C.C., the entire golf team had the opportunity to play today giving the players a chance to develop their games.

Congratulations to the trio of Conor Most, Jacky Ahn and Matthew Modelo who tied with scores of +2, 38, to earn low-round Co-Medalist Honors.

Titans Prevail Over Eagles at Salt Creek

The Titans Boys Golf Team played well today at Olympian High School's home track - Salt Creek Golf Course - carding a team score of 191 total strokes to the host team's 224. All Titans starters contributed in the win and their best score of the season to date.

Low round Medalist Honors goes to Eastlake High's Dylan Sullivan (pictured here). Dylan played lights out today scoring an even par 36. Way to go Dylan!

Eastake Sweeps Otay Ranch in Season Series

Playing their first contest after the Spring break, the starting boys golf team appeared to be rested, yet rarin' to go in this match. The boys appeared very determined. Coach Barrett's pre-round strategy with his players was effective and it showed. The players played steady throughout their rounds and all contributed to a win - 194-226. The Titan's lowest round of the season thus far.

Great job by all players!

Congratulations to freshman, Matthew Modelo, for earning low-round Medalist Honors with a score of even-par, 36.

Eastlake Falls to Saint Augustine at Opponent's Home Course

In non-league match play over the first week of Spring break, two Saint Augustine players scored even par  as they won the match against Eastlake in a closely contested battle at Riverwalk Friars Course - 204-199. The playing conditions were ideal for scoring, but course knowledge and stellar play by the opponent proved to be the deciding factor.

The Titans will certainly take some positives from this defeat.

Great job Titans!

Eastlake Over Granite Hills at Sycuan Oak Glen In Close One

In the second of a trio of tourneys played over the first week of Spring break, the starting Eastlake boys golf team travelled to beautiful Sycuan Resort Oak Glen golf course to play host Granite Hills High School. With course knowledge and a very deep roster, the Titans knew they would have their work cut out for them.

Coach Barrett's pre-match speech about keeping things simple and remembering the "little things" put the boys in the right state of mind as each player played well, allowing them to take home a win, 213-217.

Great job Titans!

Congratulations to Jacky Ahn for earning low-round Medalist Honors with a score of 1-over par, 37.

Eastlake Beats El Cap' at Barona Creek G.C., 208-260

Eastlake's starting golf squad travelled to Barona Creek Golf Club in Lakeside for their first of three tournaments to be played over Spring break. Barona Creek is a treacherous course in many ways and the course plays home to El Capitan High School. However, our boys played steady and kept their ball flights in check with the prevailing breezes and were able to walk away with an impressive victory as they beat the home team 208-260. Impressive play by all starters!

Congratulations to freshman, Matthew Modelo, for earning low-round Medalist Honors with a score of 3-over par, 39.

Eastlake 199, Otay Ranch 236

The Eastlake Titans Boys Golf team played well against the visiting Otay Ranch Mustangs. All Eastlake's starters contributed in the win and in doing so also broke the 200-stroke mark.

Congratuations to freshman, Matthew Modelo, for earning low-round Medalist Honors with a score of 2-over par, 38.
